"Know Thyself" Was Someone Else's Idea
The oldest surviving advice about identity is an instruction a visitor received on arrival. Know thyself stood inscribed at Delphi before anyone who read it had asked. The scholars say the words meant something closer to know your station: know that you are mortal and not a god. That reading is harsher and better, not an invitation to introspect but an assignment of place, issued from outside, to a person who did not write it. The tradition that most famously tells you to look inward begins with someone else telling you where you stand.
You can call yourself anything. What you cannot do is set your own weight. A self-declaration walks into the room with you; a reputation is what walks out, and only other people decide whether the two match.
Naming settles three things. What a thing is called, anyone may set, including the thing itself. What a thing produced, a signature or a fingerprint can settle. What a thing's word weighs, only others settle. Call them identity, attribution, authority. The first two can be self-made. The third arrives from outside or does not arrive.
Google spent two decades and a chain of patents on the question of who should be believed. Every answer it kept to that question obeys this constraint. The one answer that defied it lasted three years.

Adam Names the Animals and Never Names Himself
Genesis carries the shape exactly. The man is given the animals to name, and whatever he calls each one, that is its name. The work is a share in ordering the world. And in the same narrative, the man never names himself. His name arrives from the same source he did. "He created them male and female, and blessed them, and called their name Mankind in the day they were created" (Genesis 5:2, NKJV). The word rendered Mankind is, in Hebrew, adam, which carries the memory of adamah, the ground the man was shaped from. Even the given name records a source outside the one who bears it.
The man does name the woman. That is authority of the derivative kind, exercised by someone who had first been named himself: a chain of naming, each link receiving before it confers.
Attempts at Self-Naming
The modern period is a series of increasingly serious attempts to break the pattern.
Descartes made the strongest opening move. Doubt everything, and the one certainty left standing is the doubter: a self certain of itself from the inside, needing no prior namer to know that it exists. But the cogito arrives in the middle of a meditation addressed to God, and within pages Descartes needs God to guarantee anything beyond the bare instant of thinking. The paradigm case of self-founding smuggled a guarantor in through the front door and called the arrangement certainty. A self can know that it exists from the inside. What it cannot do from the inside is make that knowledge count beyond the instant of its own performance.
Locke tried the quieter route: you are whoever your memory says you are. The objection that has followed the theory since the eighteenth century is that memory cannot do this job, because a memory only counts as yours if you already are the person who had the experience. The criterion presupposes the thing it was hired to establish. Kierkegaard, a century on, gave the finding its permanent form: the self is a relation, and a relation cannot be one of its own terms. Something outside the loop has to hold it closed.
Sartre made the maximal version explicit: existence precedes essence, no given nature, the self as its own project. Create yourself all day. But the look of the Other, in his own account, is where your public self arrives from, an objectification your freedom can never repeal. He saw the mechanism and despised it. Self-creation is permitted. Self-authorization is not. A hostile witness is still a witness.
In March 1964, fresh from taking the heavyweight title, Cassius Clay announced that his name was Muhammad Ali. Even the new name arrived from outside, conferred by Elijah Muhammad. The declaration was necessary. Nothing happens without it. It was also, for years, insufficient. The press went on printing Clay. Opponents used the old name as a taunt, and paid for it in the ring. The refusal was not neutral. Printing Clay was a way of rejecting the claim the new name carried. The name became his the way every name does: as the world took it up, one witness at a time. He chose the name. The naming was everyone else.
The fast renamings obey the same rule. When Facebook became Meta the new name took days, because the weight already existed and the renaming spent it rather than creating it.
Which leaves a question the ancient world never had to face: what happens when the namer is a machine.

The Search Engine Becomes the Namer
A civilization's answer to who has authority lives inside whatever apparatus does the naming. For most of history the apparatus was slow and human: the village that knew you, the guild that admitted you, the bishop or the court that confirmed you, the publisher who put your name on a spine. Each was a namer. None asked you.
The press installed the license and the imprint. Broadcast installed spectrum and the anchor desk. The medium becomes the answer. Every replacement installed a new namer, and none installed self-naming. Which means who gets named is now, mostly, a question about search.
Google Authorship: The Experiment
On August 8, 2005, Google filed the application that became US Patent 7,565,358, known as Agent Rank. The mechanism, from the patent itself: digital signatures associate agents with content, and a reputation score attaches to the agent and feeds ranking. The unit of authority is a signed self-declaration. I am this agent; this content is mine; score me. A signature settles attribution. Agent Rank priced it as authority.
The proposal was stranger than it looks now, because Google already ran on the opposite unit. PageRank, the mechanism the company was built on in 1998, treated a link as a vote cast by someone else. External corroboration was the founding architecture. Authorship was the company stepping outside its own first insight.
In June 2011 the idea shipped. The rel="author" markup, wired to a Google+ profile, let any writer on the web claim their work, and Google Authorship put verified faces beside search results. Declare your identity, link it to yourself, and the system would treat the declaration as the thing that mattered.
Three years later it was gone. The author photos were reduced in December 2013 and removed by June 2014, and on August 28, 2014, John Mueller announced that Authorship was discontinued.
It did not die of philosophy. It died of economics. A self-declaration costs nothing to produce, and a signal that costs nothing to produce will be manufactured at scale by whoever it benefits. Abuse followed the incentive: markup misapplied, misattributed, gamed for the visibility the photos conferred. Google+ failed as the identity anchor, which left Google policing self-declared data across the open web, a cleanup cost with nothing on the return side. Mueller's words record the return side: the authorship information "isn't as useful to our users as we'd hoped, and can even distract from those results." Removing it "does not seem to reduce traffic to sites. Nor does it increase clicks on ads." The verdict came from measured behavior, the one witness nobody could argue with. A declaration nothing vouches for is free to make, and a signal free to make is worthless to receive.
The obvious repair is to make the declaration expensive: verify it, charge for it, punish fraud. But a costly declaration is not a self-declaration. The cost has to be imposed and enforced by someone who is not you, which means the signal's whole value is the outside party standing behind it. Every verified badge is a witness wearing the declarant's clothes. The experiment has since run again. When a social platform put its checkmark up for sale, the mark that had been a witness's verdict became a declaration with a price, and the market repriced it almost immediately. Different company, different decade, same ledger.
Midway through the experiment, Google's systems credited Truman Capote with a 2010 New York Times article, twenty-eight years after his death. The actual author, Emily Bazelon, held the Truman Capote fellowship at Yale Law School. Her biography said so, and an extraction pipeline with no check on whether its candidate was alive took the highest-weight name it found. This was not self-declaration gone wrong. It was outside inference gone wrong, the machinery everything after Authorship runs on. The pattern says nothing about the namer's competence. Corroboration binds the namer as much as the named, and nothing about how weight arrives certifies that whoever holds the scales deserves them.
Attribution Comes Back as Inference
Ten months after Authorship was discontinued, Google filed the provisional application that became US Patent 10,599,770, "Generating Author Vectors" (Brian Strope and Quoc Le, granted March 24, 2020). Neural networks characterize an author's style and selection patterns from the text itself. A patent describes an invention, not a deployment. What it documents is the direction of the engineering. The web is bad at labeling itself: structured data incomplete, inconsistent, sometimes dishonest. A system that waits for webmasters to declare identity cleanly waits forever. So when self-declaration failed as data, the engineering inferred the author from the writing. The system stopped asking who you say you are and started determining who the writing, and everything around it, reveals you to be. Identity re-entered as relation, by way of a maintenance problem.
Stylometry reads a fingerprint, and a fingerprint is yours. The identification is not. The features live in the writing; the verdict is rendered by a system that is not the writer, against a corpus the writer does not control, with no appeal. The author supplies evidence. Someone else decides what it proves.
Trust on Top
The public doctrine says the same thing in plainer clothes. E-A-T became E-E-A-T in December 2022 with the addition of Experience, and the Quality Rater Guidelines behind it run 182 pages in their September 2025 revision. Google's own documentation states the hierarchy outright: "Of these aspects, trust is most important." Mapped onto Google's definitions rather than quoted from them: experience is what the page itself asserts. Expertise and authoritativeness are external witnesses, institutional and reputational. Trust is the synthesis, and Google put the synthesis on top. E-E-A-T is the authority layer, resting on an attribution layer that no longer asks permission.
Underneath runs the Knowledge Graph, the "things, not strings" project Google announced in 2012, now the substrate AI search stands on. Schema markup, Wikidata identifiers, and sameAs cross-links feed entity disambiguation, and generative answers are assembled against whatever entity resolution the graph can supply.
The graph is a gate on only some answers. Where the answer is a commodity, true no matter who says it, retrieval pulls text on semantic similarity alone, and a sharp page from an unmapped entity can surface against a specific enough question. A commodity answer carries no speaker to weigh. The moment a query needs judgment, experience, or a position, the answer stops being speakerless, and identity walks back in: brand queries, entity panels, anything trust-weighted. There, an entity the graph cannot resolve argues its case without a file. Even the pure retrieval passed filters upstream: what gets crawled, quality-scored, and kept has already been named.
A graph has no single namer. It does not need one. The pattern requires an outside, not an appointee, and a graph is witnessing, aggregated: no node's uncorroborated self-assertion carries entity confidence on its own. What the aggregation cannot do is ground itself. A web of nodes vouching for each other is Locke's circle scaled up: consensus wide enough to be useful, and still a circle. The graph anchors to registries, coordinates, official records, and each anchor is another namer folded in, an institution whose own authority arrived the same way everything else's did. Widening a loop buys reliability, not grounding. The graph has not escaped the circle. It has made the loop too large to see from inside.
The last entity I wired into the graph was a bike rental business on the Outer Banks. The self-declaration took an afternoon: the site, the schema written by hand, the claim. The rest of the engagement went to the witnesses. The business profile, the listings on the review platforms, one name and address and phone held identical across every place a machine might read them, sameAs links stitching each copy to the others. None of it is glamorous. All of it is the job: getting systems that are not the client to say the same thing, in the same words.
The Price of a Witness
The obvious attack on all of this is that witnesses can be bought. They can. Link farms, paid reviews, PR placement, citation rings: an entire gray industry exists to manufacture corroboration, and it has existed as long as corroboration has been worth anything.
But the market itself tells you the difference. A self-declaration is free, so its price stays at zero and its value stays with it. A witness has a cost floor: someone must be paid, persuaded, or built. So bought authority degrades under attack instead of collapsing, and every witness you can buy, your rival can buy. The arms race prices the signal at exactly what it costs to fake. The system's recourse is to re-weight toward witnesses with skin in the game: registries, transaction records, physical presence, the anchors the graph already leans on. If the pattern holds, the next five years will show weight migrating toward signals that cost something to fake and away from mention volume. That is a forecast, and it is checkable.
The pressure is now industrial. A thousand plausible corroborating sources cost a few dollars and an afternoon, and style itself has become purchasable witness-texture. I read drafts every working day where a machine has faked the grammar of experience, invented anecdotes wearing first-person detail. Style is a proxy witness, extended on credit, and the credit gets repriced the way every cheap signal before it was. A witness is outside only when its incentives do not reduce to yours. The mention that counts is the one from a party who could have said no.
The Namer You Cannot Read
The current namer is the model. What it knows of an entity was fixed at training time, from a crawl the entity never saw, and what it says is assembled from that memory plus whatever retrieval corrects it. When a system resolves an identity from sources the subject cannot inspect, the old problem returns in a new form: recognition that is opaque, stale, and sometimes wrong. Capote's error, industrialized.
Every namer before this one could be argued with. The guild could be petitioned, the bishop appealed, the publisher persuaded, the index corrected: fix the schema, earn the citation, watch the graph update. The model is the first namer that cannot hear you. If it has an entity wrong, there is no form to file and no party to petition. The correction arrives at the next training run, if it arrives at all, from a corpus the entity influences only at the margins.
Continuity Is Self-Establishable. Authority Never Is.
The identity systems now being built against the machine namers (cryptographic signatures, biometric binding, the self-sovereign movement's credentials and decentralized identifiers) all prove the same thing: continuity, that this is the same entity that spoke before. In the opening terms, they settle identity and attribution. That is real, and it is the ceiling. A signature can prove who spoke. It cannot prove why anyone should listen. Signing, hashing, and matching are acts an entity performs on itself. Recognizing is an act only others can perform, and recognition is what authority compounds on. Continuity is a math problem. Authority is a social one.
The claim would break if any entity, anywhere, accumulated durable weight on self-assertion alone, in a system where the declaration itself, unvouched, carried the authority. That system was built. It shipped in June 2011 with a checkmark and a face, and it lasted three years. Call the pattern by the name the machines already use: named entities. Identity can be declared; authority has to be corroborated. Nothing enters the graph, or the world, on its own declaration. Things get named.
Publish the Claim, Then Build the Corroboration
For the practitioner, all of this converts to a working order. Publish the self-declaration first, because it is necessary: insufficiency has never meant illegitimacy, and an entity that claims nothing gives the witnesses nothing to corroborate. Then build the corroboration as the actual job.
One name, one address, one set of identifiers, held identical everywhere a system might read them. The entity wired into whatever resolves it: schema, sameAs links, the registries appropriate to what it is. A Wikidata item where the entity genuinely qualifies, and nowhere it doesn't. An item with nothing behind it is one more uncorroborated claim. Wikidata says so itself: its admission standard is significant coverage in independent sources, and notability is neither inherited nor self-conferred. The encyclopedia of entities wrote the rule into its door policy. Recognition earned from parties who are not you, which is the cold part of the start: an unrecognized entity has nothing to trade for its first witness except what it has actually done.
Experience answers the cold start. It is the one signal that cannot be compiled from other people's maps, the only asset an entity owns before anyone has named it. And it confers nothing by being claimed. It gives the first witness a reason to speak.
The declaration is step one. The corroboration is the job. Most entity strategy inverts this, polishing the claim and waiting: Authorship's mistake re-enacted one site at a time.
This Article Is a Self-Declaration
This page is a step-one play. It sits on a domain that carries my own name, published by an author the entity graph barely resolves, asserting a law about why such assertions confer nothing on their own. The schema is written. The headers are built to be retrieved. None of it changes what the page is on the day it publishes: a claim with no witness attached, which is what every page is until systems that are not its author begin to say the same thing.
The inscription at Delphi reads differently from down here. It was never advice to generate a self by introspection. It was a namer speaking first, from outside, assigning a mortal his place. Every name that has ever held weight arrived the same way. I have made the claim. The rest is witnesses.
